Gut Bugs

These little fellas play a BIG role in your gut health, which in turn influences how you’re feeling.  Yeah, I’m looking at you, anxiety & low mood.  Good gut bugs will assist your body with digestion & absorption of nutrients, as well rally your immune system.  Honestly, what you choose to eat impacts on your body so many different ways.

But, back to gut bugs though, how can they influence mood?  OK, the gut bacteria effects the chemical messages which are sent to the brain to help out the neurotransmitters.  It is these neurotransmitters which help us feel good!  You may have heard of some of them, such as GABA (AKA gamma-aminobutyric acid), dopamine & serotonin.  Additionally, gut bugs affect the prompts your body receives on how you store fat & balance your blood glucose levels.

Sounds amazing!  However, those little gut bugs are VERY particular about their food & environment – meaning they get out of balance super easy, so consequently the pathway is compromised & inefficient.

OK, so what do gut bugs like to eat?

❤️ Fibre: THINK whole grains, beans & legumes, & whole fruits & vegetables.

❤️ Fermented foods: CONSIDER sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, kefir & pickles.

❤️ Greens: GO FOR broccoli, asparagus & seaweed.

❤️ Fruits: LOVE apples & bananas.

❤️ Plus, a special shout out to garlic!

The take home message: eat a wide variety of foods in loads of different colours to help your gut bugs to help you.

I am incredibly passionate about food and its healing power – it is pretty amazing how what you eat affects how your body works! In fact, I was so fascinated, I went & got myself a degree in it – a Bachelor of Health Science (Nutritional and Dietetic Medicine). Now in all honesty I don’t eat or live a perfect lifestyle, nor will I ever pretend I do. Realistically I know you won’t be perfect either. And that’s OK. As a Clinical Nutritionist I focus on what we eat and how this has an impact on our health and wellness – everyday.
