Winter Solstice and Sunday Set Ups

Today is winter solstice – the shortest day of the year in the southern hemisphere.  That means the longest night of the year – no wonder it was hard to get out of bed this morning!

Hmm, Sundays I love to use them to set up for the rest of the week to come.  Days are getting longer now, so use them wisely.  It is easy to get the Sunday night blues & you aren’t alone in that.  I like to try to set up my week on a Sunday.  I guess these ideas could be seen as rituals, even lifestyle tweaks but if it makes the week less stressy, count me in!

  1. Go outside

Breathe some fresh air!  It doesn’t matter how long you choose to do it, so whether it’s a walk to the shops for the paper, a bike ride by the water with a coffee break, or just a stroll in the park – bottom line – just get outside.  It will help your mental wellbeing, increase your creativity & can help with your blood pressure.  It makes you feel revitalised & sets you up for the day.  Besides what a lovely way to start your day.

  • Clean sheets

I believe clean, sundried sheets are really one of life’s little pleasures.  Take a few minutes out to put clean sheets on the bed.  It makes Sunday night just that little bit better.

  • Plan & prep your food

I am a huge fan of meal prep – it saves time, money & stress.  Yup, count me in.  So, whether it’s cooking a double batch of something, prepping some midweek snacks, or chopping some vege – it is a great investment for the week.  I like to crank up some tunes, so there may be off key singing + un co-ordinated dancing – just sayin’!….

  • Power down

I set aside a few hours (usually about 2) with no phones, TVs, computers.  This allows you to try something new or do something you have been wanting to do.  It just needs to be something that makes you happy (without a screen).

  • Include some self-care

Make sure your day includes something you love; it is an important part of self-care.  Whether it is a long bath, reading a book by yourself, chilling with friends & playing board games, or sharing a meal with someone – make sure it is something YOU love & it makes YOU happy.  For me this often combines with powering down, it allows you enjoy the moment.

Board games & games in general are always a winner in hour house.

I am incredibly passionate about food and its healing power – it is pretty amazing how what you eat affects how your body works! In fact, I was so fascinated, I went & got myself a degree in it – a Bachelor of Health Science (Nutritional and Dietetic Medicine). Now in all honesty I don’t eat or live a perfect lifestyle, nor will I ever pretend I do. Realistically I know you won’t be perfect either. And that’s OK. As a Clinical Nutritionist I focus on what we eat and how this has an impact on our health and wellness – everyday.
